"I’m not tough enough to be a doctor".
.
"I’m too sensitive to be a doctor".
.
At The Joyful Doctor, we hear these statements from doctors all the time. We know from personal experience that as doctors , we have these thoughts and feelings about ourselves, many, many times.
.
We get it. We have felt that way too. But we have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
.
As doctors, we do a job that exposes us on a daily basis to tremendous levels of trauma, grief, pain, misery, uncertainty, anxiety, loss and fear. And we keep showing up. And we’ve kept showing up for years.
.
So, with that in mind, are we really ‘too' sensitive’?
.
Or is it simply that we are human, and sometimes, quite naturally and normally, find it’s all just a bit too much to cope with and we feel a bit overwhelmed?
.
Is it that at times, we just need to take a break, have someone to listen to us, or to let outselves have a cry?
.
Doctors are incredibly resilient people.
.
Next time you question whether you are ’up to the job’ - just take a step back and look at the job you are trying to be ‘up to’.
.
And be open to seeing just what a resilient and amazing human being you really are.
